Our Focus: Showing Respect

British Value: This week, we’re thinking about how important it is to show respect to everyone, especially those who might believe or celebrate different things than we do.  In our school, we want everyone to feel safe, welcome and valued, no matter what they believe!

What Does Showing Respect Mean?

Showing respect means being kind, listening carefully and treating others the way we want to be treated.  It means understanding that everyone is special and unique, with their own beliefs, traditions and ways of doing things.

How Can We Show Respect?

Listen and Learn: If a friend shares something about their holiday or a tradition from home, listen carefully and show interest! Asking questions like “What’s that like?” or “How do you celebrate?” is a great way to show respect and learn something new.

Use Kind Words: Sometimes we might not understand why people do things differently.  That’s okay!  Even if we don’t agree or we’re not sure, we can still be kind and say respectful words.  This helps everyone feel safe and happy.

Celebrate Differences: Think about how fun it is that we all have different things to share!  Maybe your friend celebrates a different holiday or has a special tradition. This makes our school interesting and full of new things to learn!

Stand Up for Respect: If you ever hear someone saying something unkind about another person’s beliefs, stand up and remind them that in our school, we respect everyone.  You can simply say, “We are kind here.”

Music Moment of the Week – Don’t Laugh at Me – Mark Wills

“Don’t Laugh at Me” is a song written by Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin and recorded by American country music artist Mark Wills.  It was released in July 1998 as the second single from album Wish You Were Here.  Like “I Do (Cherish You)” before it, “Don’t Laugh at Me” was a number 2 hit on the Billboard country charts.  The song received Country Music Association nominations for Country Music Association’s Single, Song and Video of the Year in 1998. 

Influential Figure of the Week – Alfie Robinson

Alfie Robinson, aged 10, has been truly inspirational during the last year.  Alfie was bullied in Year 5 within his school year and struggled with the impact this had on him and his wellbeing, he couldn’t understand why other children would act this way towards him especially after the difficulty of the pandemic.  Alfie didn’t miss any time off school and decided he would use his experience to make a difference to others, with this in mind he set up his own campaign @shinealightwithalfie, he used this to raise awareness on the impact of bullying and mental health.  This involved Alfie designing posters and writing to people and companies to support his campaign.  He developed a presentation and talked about his experience to his school class and designed a poster for the school reception area and every classroom.  He has gained support from the Bedfordshire PCC, The Children’s Commissioner, Ditch The Label, LTFC, Bedford Town, TOKKO, Indigo estate agent, Nu Branding and many others.  Alfie’s aim is to continue raising awareness and making a difference for other children, he would like to become an anti-bullying ambassador moving forwards.
